The New Mayor Pledges a 'Fresh Chapter' for The Big Apple in First Address

During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his administration.

A Historic Leader

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Basic Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
